Oral-B vs. Sonicare: Your Dentist in South Hadley Evaluates Your Options

Woman brushing teethYour toothbrush is the most frequently used dental tool you use to combat oral health issues like tooth decay and gum disease. To maximize your oral hygiene efforts, your dentist in South Hadley likely recommends that you use an electric one. Although manual toothbrushes are effective, they do not offer the same capabilities. When making the switch to an electric toothbrush, you have many excellent options. Among the most popular are the Braun Oral-B and Philips Sonicare, but which is best? To choose the right one for your needs, there are several things you should consider.

Braun Oral-B vs. Philips Sonicare

The Oral-B electric models have been recommended for several years as it was one of the first soft nylon bristle toothbrushes. As a trusted brand, it was even the first one to travel to the moon on Apollo 11 in 1969.

In 2001, a new competitor entered the market, Philip Sonicare, which became the bestselling electric toothbrush in the U.S. Due to new technology over the years, Oral-B has made several improvements, making it difficult to determine which is the better option.

Brushing Technology

There are two main differences between the toothbrushes. Sonicare features vibration technology while Oral-B uses rotation-oscillation. With Sonicare, the side-by-side movements produce 31,000 strokes per minute while the brush head of Oral-B spins and makes 16-degree movements. The rotary technology allows for two different approaches to brushing.

Brush Head

If you prefer options when choosing a brush head, Oral-B tends to have more as they have a variety of replacements, which are often cheaper than those of Philip Sonicare. However, Oral-B brush heads tend to be larger, which may make it harder to reach certain areas in the mouth. As a result, many tend to prefer Sonicare as they can be more comfortable and easier to use.

Features

Since Oral-B toothbrushes are generally cheaper than Sonicare, they are often believed to be a less beneficial option. However, more of their models come with a technology that cannot be found on many of their competitor’s models.

Oral-B has a pressure sensor to alert you when you are brushing too hard, which is standard with all but a couple of their toothbrushes. On the other hand, Philip Sonicare only has one or two toothbrushes that have this feature.

Which Is Best?

Both toothbrushes have their pros and cons. As a result, it can come down to personal preference when making a selection. If you are looking for an option that is affordable while producing effective results, Oral-B may be the right option for you. However, if you want to make an investment, Sonicare may be the better choice as it tends to have a longer battery life and higher voltage.
